how to tie it. As far as toilet mastery,
you can't learn it driving around town
in a car. You need consistency —
being in one place."
In addition, she feels that today's
preschoolers take longer to learn how
to communicate and how to negotiate
with others, even though their speech
and phonics may be excellent.
"If I could change one thing," she
says, "I'd give more hands-on skills
and get them away from the television
and the computers."

Once again, family considerations are
behind Levitsky's decision to leave her
job, retiring at a very healthy and vig-
orous 59 years old. But this time, it's a
happy occasion — her daughter, now
married and living in California is
expecting twins in September.
They will be the first grandchildren
for Levitsky and her husband, Dan,
longtime residents of Bloomfield
Township.
"I need the flexibility to travel to
California — I don't want to be an
absentee grandma," she says.
Beginning next year, Jordana Weiss
will be director of Adat Shalom's nurs-
ery and kindergarten. Most recently
assistant director of planning and
agency relations at the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,
Weiss worked with Levitsky for six
months before assuming the job. In
addition, she has been deeply involved
with the Jewish Early Education
Enhancement Project UEEEP).
"I've been working in the field of
Jewish education and I \ va nt ed to be
on the service side of it," says Weiss,
who has two children under age 2. "I
have truly enjoyed my time at
Federation, but feel it's time to begin
impacting people's lives directly."
In. Adat Shalom's summer bulletin,
Rabbi Daniel Nevins says the congre-
gation has been "extremely fortunate
to have Dottie Levitsky as our direc-
tor for so many years.
"She is a true professional, attend-
Mg to both the little details and the
big picture."
Rabbi Nevins ends his column with
the words: 'As a parent whose first child
graduates from the Adat Shalom kinder-
garten this month and who anticipates
the enrollment of his third child next
year, I am delighted to salute Dottie and
all the teachers for a job well done.
"The children are our treasure, and
you have made them shine. May God
bless you and keep you as you contin-
ue your sacred work." El
