Israelis Kill
Suspected Bombers

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli commandos
killed two Palestinians who allegedly
were planting a bomb. The comman-
dos also shot and killed two other
Palestinians who later approached the
bodies.
The incident occurred early
Wednesday morning, when the corn-
mandos spotted three Palestinians who
they said were trying to plant a bomb in
the area of Shavei Shomron, an Israeli
settlement near the West Bank city of
Nablus. The commandos said the third
man escaped after being wounded.
Meanwhile, Israeli troops fired two
missiles Wednesday at a Palestinian
police station in a village in the Gaza
Strip, wounding seven Palestinian
policemen. Israel said it fired the mis-
siles after a Palestinian mortar attack
on a nearby Israeli settlement.

Bombed Pizzeria
Will Reopen

Jerusalem/JTA — The management of
a Jerusalem pizzeria gutted by a
Palestinian suicide bomber earlier this
month said they plan to renovate and
reopen the restaurant.
The Jerusalem Sbarro branch has
a symbolic significance that goes
beyond the commercial aspect, and
we will do everything to rebuild the
branch," a company spokesman said.
Fifteen people were killed and more
than 130 wounded in the Aug. 9 sui-
cide bombing.

Female Pilot
Joins El Al

Tel Aviv/JTA — El Al Israel Airlines'
first female pilot completed her first
flight for the carrier over the weekend,
according to the Jerusalem Post.
First Officer Merav Schwartz
obtained a private pilot's license over-
seas. Most pilots for El Al formerly
were pilots for Israel's air force.

U-M Student
Arrested In Israel

Jerusalem/JTA — A graduate student at
the University of Michigan was arrested
and spent two days in jail in Jerusalem
last week for protesting against Israel's
takeover of Orient House, the

Palestinian headquarters in Jerusalem.
The Jerusalem Post quoted police as
saying they will press charges against
Andrew Clarno, 26, for allegedly
attacking an Israeli officer. Clarno, a
member of the International Solidarity
Movement (ISM), claims he was
choked and hit by Israeli border police
before being arrested. He was released
pending a court appearance to face
charges of taking part in an illegal gath-
ering and assaulting a police officer.
Heidi Arraf, a 25-year-old
Palestinian American from Detroit,
moved to Jerusalem a year ago to help
put together the ISM, an umbrella
group of activists in support of
Palestinian statehood and an end to
nearly 11 months of violence.
"Our governments are calling for the
same thing — you must take action to
end the violence. But no one is taking
action. We are," she told the Jerusalem Post.
About 80 activists from the U.S. and
Europe responded to mass e-mail calls to
come to the region this month to join
local activists for two weeks of demon-
strations, the newspaper reported.

Reform W ovement
Restores Youth Trips

New York/JTA — The U.S. Reform
movement, which drew headlines and
criticism for canceling its youth trips
to Israel this summer, is resuming high
school programs in Israel this fall.
Rabbi Allan Smith, director of
youth programming for the move-
ment's Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, said it would send 25
students for the semester because the
Jewish Agency for Israel and the Israeli
government have stepped up their
security provisions in recent months.

Temple Mount Wall
Could Collapse

Jerusalem/JTA — Part of the retaining
wall holding up the southern end of
the Temple Mount in Jerusalem is in
danger of collapsing, but finger point-
ing by Israelis and Palestinians is hold-
ing up repairs.
A 35-foot-wide bulge could cause
the wall to cave in. Israel lays the
blame on the Wakf, or Islamic trust,
which has done extensive renovations
to an underground mosque on the
mount. Palestinians say Israeli archaeo-
logical digs are damaging the wall,
which was built around the eighth
century on the site of the First and
Second Temples.
