To Attend Forum

ers urged U.S. Secretary of State Colin
Powell to attend an upcoming U.N.
conference against racism where Israel
may be scapegoated, but to walk out if
necessary.

news conference Tuesday.

lIsrael: We Foiled
Suicide Bomb

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli officials say
they foiled an attempt by Islamic Jihad
to carry out a suicide bombing at a
Haifa disco. According to details released
for publication, two Palestinians from
Jenin were arrested in an Israeli Arab vil-
lage on the night of Aug. 16 with a 22-
pound bomb in their truck.

Diseases May
Get New Foe

screening tests for genetic diseases at
low cost.
The New York-based Trust for
ewish Philanthropy, an offshoot of
the North American federation system
and an incubator for large-scale, inno-

vative Jewish projects, is considering
launching a genetics project that
would offer tests for diseases such as
Tay-Sachs and Canavan.
The project could also support
research on gene mutations for which
screening tests have not yet been
developed.

Jerusalem/JTA — Israeli border police
delivered a Palestinian baby over the
weekend, according to Israeli media
reports.
The delivery came after policemen
heard cries coming from a vehicle at a
West Bank checkpoint. Mother and
baby, currently at a hospital in the Israeli
city of Afula, reportedly are doing well.

Shul Can Move
Into Ex-Convent

New York/JTA — A Reform Jewish
congregation in suburban Philadelphia
can move into a building previously
used as a Roman Catholic convent, a
local zoning board decided.
The Aug. 15 decision reversed an
earlier ruling against Congregation
Kol Ami that had been made after
complaints from residents in the area
concerned about possible traffic, noise
and pollution.
After that decision, Kol Ami sued
the township of Abington, Pa., under
a federal law designed to protect reli-
gious discrimination in zoning issues.
