"It's like a lawn chair on wheels,"
he explained. "It's a lot easier on the
back than having to often stand and
pedal. But it's really tough going up

Konvisser's biggest daily challenge
was taking care of his Type 1 dia-
betes that he contracted at age 52.
He must check his blood sugar sev-
eral times daily by pricking his fin-
ger with a small needle and then
regulating his diet accordingly.
Every other day, he injects himself
with insulin through a tube into his
stomach, measured out by a pump.
On the ride, "I had to keep the
insulin cool in a thermos along the
way, and I also relied on the motel
room refrigerators," he said. "It did-
n't really bother me on the trip and
I feel fine."
Konvisser and the rest of the rid-
ers were jolted one morning when a
man in the group was found dead
from natural causes in his motel
room in Jackson Hole, Wyo.
Another time, one of the bikes was
hit by a car and the injured rider
ended the trek. He's reluctant to
talk about either incident.
"I'm just focused on the positive
aspects of the trip," he said.
Konvisser's wife, who doesn't ride
a bike, flew out to visit him on a
couple of his days off, and Joshua,
who already has made a cross-coun-
try bike trip of his own, joined his
father for the last three days of the
journey, from Albany, N.Y. to
Portsmouth.
At the beginning of the trip,
Konvisser arrived early at the desti-
nation and tried to find a syna-
gogue where he could &wen Mischa
and Maariv. "I got the name of a
synagogue in Cheyenne, Wyo., and
I called and called, but no one
answered," he said. "So, I couldn't
tell if they had services or not.
"I've tried to catch up since -env
return at my own shul,
