that often resulted in "tired feet and
sore butts."An average day of riding
covered between 50 and 100 miles.
Some 65 riders, ranging in age
from 15 to 75, participated in the
trip organized by America By
Bicycle. Each bicyclist paid $5,000
to tough it out for 52 days over the
hills and dales of northern America.
The cost covers a motel each night,
breakfast and dinner and the servic-
es of three support vehicles, one car-
rying two expert bike mechanics and
one with liquids and snacks to keep
the group hydrated from 6-7 a.m. to
3-5 p.m. each day.

50-100 Miles

"I love to ride a bicycle," declared
Konvisser, 60, a computer software
consultant who belongs to a bike
club and has gone on many shorter
bike-riding trips throughout
Michigan•He once covered 500
miles in five days.
"Now, I wanted to get out and
see the rest of the country, so this
trip was a natural. It was rough at
times, but it was a lot of fun."
Rough included four stitches and
bruises in Wisconsin after the bike
hit a pothole and Konvisser ripped
over. But the incident didn't daunt
Konvisser's enthusiasm or resolve.
"We could ride in a group or on
our own, as long as we covered a
specified number of miles per day,
usually about 80, and get to the
motel on the schedule. There wasn't
much time for sightseeing, although
we caught glimpses of places along
the way, such as Mt. Rushmore. We
were so tired at night that we went
to sleep early ... there's little time to
chill out. It was almost like a mili-
tary boot camp."
A native of Cleveland, Konvisser
attended Rutgers and Ohio State
universities and came to Michigan
to become a math professor at
Wayne State University in Detroit.
He moved to Massachusetts for a
while when his wife Zieva, a
Chrysler Corp. employee, was
appointed manager of the firm's
Boston Parts Plant.
He retired from teaching after
returning to the Detroit area. She
retired after 25 years at Chrysler.
They have two sons, Aaron, 33, and
Joshua, 31.
Because of recurring back trou-
ble, Konvisser rides on a recumbent
bike, which allows him to recline
while pedaling. It has a large rear
wheel, a small front wheel and a
