f the end of summer is here,
it's time for the JCC Maccabi
Youth Games, and many
young Jewish athletes from
metro Detroit are headed to Jersey
Shore, N.J., and Philadelphia, Pa., to
compete, socialize, make friends, and
have a lot of fun Aug. 19-24.
If you'd like to go, too, but can't
join these lucky teens, then point
your browser to www.jccmaccabi.org
and become a Web spectator.
The home page, attractive, well-
organized and easy to navigate, offers
answers to the old five w's: Who,
What, Where, When, Why (and
How and What's the Point) of the
games. There are also some short
video clips of past games, for which
you must have the Quicktime plug-in
(downloadable for free).
Check out the history of the games,
and notice that Detroit was host in
1984, 1990 and 1998. You'll quickly
appreciate what a big undertaking the
games are for the host cities. This
year, five cities will house and enter-
tain a total of 6,000 athletes and
1,000 coaches, not to mention 3,000
visitors and 30,000 spectators. For
this fete, a total of 4.000 volunteers
and 25,000 host families will be
called into service. No wonder
Detroit is taking a rest, at least
through 2006.

This year's athletes, by the way,
come from 100 U.S. and Canadian
cities, as well as from Israel, Mexico,
Australia, Venezuela, Argentina,
Poland and Great Britain.
From the home page, follow the
link to "Current Games" under the
"Where and When" pull-down menu
and click on any of the five cities to
visit their own Web pages. For the
games that have concluded in Atlanta
and (Aug. 5-10), and Miami (Aug.
12-17), you can check out the game
results, the competition and social
schedules, and enjoy some pictures
from the games. Sarasota (Aug. 5-
10), however, offers only a link to
their JCC Web site, which is too bad
for the families back home in Ann
Arbor who were part of those games..
From all indications, though, our
delegation's hosts, Philadelphia and
Jersey Shore, will be up to the task of
providing the information that
surfers, especially parents and grand-
parents, crave. Or, if the family is
going, both sites provide visitors'
guides to the cities.
There's much for the armchair ath-
lete to enjoy at www.jccmaccabi.org .

teams.
