I believe that one of the primary
purposes of your article on Wayne
State University ("Wayne State
Revisited," June 15, page 14) was to
feature Jewish-Hebrew studies with
a focus on the diversity of students
enrolled in these programs. This let-
ter is in response to a related letter
to the editor ("Jewish Involvement
At Wayne," Aug. 10, page 5).
The faculty members mentioned
in the article, namely David
Weinberg and myself, are directly
involved in the teaching of Jewish
subjects at Wayne. David teaches
Jewish history and I give Hebrew
language and literature courses, both
biblical and modern, including an
Israeli culture class.
I don't think the article intended
to exclude anyone, or take a census
of the Jewish faculty members at
Wayne who teach in the various col-
leges and departments in the under-
graduate and graduate levels. One of
the main goals of the article was to
bring to the attention of the Jewish
community the existence, extent
and diversity of Jewish-Hebrew

studies at Wayne.
President Irvin Reid's involvement
in the Zippori/Israeli dig and study
project, and Miriam Starkman's
efforts at Hillel on campus, were
also highlighted.
Those directly involved in the
teaching and promoting of Jewish-
Hebrew programs at Wayne State
were rightfully mentioned. It is,
however, regrettable if others in this
capacity were unintentionally over-
looked.
