COVER STORY

A

year ago, most Israelis and Americans concerned about
Israel believed that Yasser Arafat, the leader of the
Palestinian Authority, wanted to be a "partner for peace."
But his refusal to stop the f'alestinian Violence that began Sept. 28
on Temple Mount and escalated into the current intifad a has
demonstrated that he can never play that role.
So many people are starting to look ahead, at the upcoming
Palestinian leaders who are closest in line to replace Arafat. Michael
Widlanski, an expert who has been tracking the next group of
Palestinian leaders, reports on the succession scenarios in this week's
Cover Story, "After Arafat."
