"We must not be afraid to do
this," he say s, but warns, "We must
be aware of the implications of the
potential to regenerate organs and
body tissue. Just like atomic energy,
which we can use for healing or to
make a bomb, this can be used for
good or for evil."

Organizational Reaction

Some Jewish leaders would have
liked to see the president go further,
including Rabbi Richard Address,
director of the (Reform) Union of
American Hebrew Congregations'
Department of Jewish Family
Concerns.
His hope is that this step will
allow reflection on the linkages
between tradition and medical tech-
nology.
Many groups praised the presi-
dent's decision, but — because it
will allow funding for research only
on about 60 existing stem cell lines
— expressed hope that the scope of
funding would be expanded in the
future.
Hadassah, the Women's Zionist
Organization of America, is in favor
of stem cell research, but said it is
"cautiously optimistic" about the
decision. The Orthodox Union,
which recently came out in favor of
stem cell research, said it is comfort-
able with Bush's stance.
"Our limits would have been more
expansive," said Nathan Diament,
director of the Orthodox Union's
Institute for Public Affairs. "But
there's nothing wrong with proceed-
ing with caution."
The National Council of Jewish
Women said it is "deeply disappoint-
ed" by the president's decision, call-
ing it too narrow and restricting.
The Reform movement's Union of
American Hebrew Congregations
recently sent letters to President
Bush and Department of Health and
Human Services Secretary Tommy
Thompson in favor . of "carefully reg-
ulated" federal funding of embryonic
stem cell research.
Quoting Deuteronomy, the letter
noted that Jewish tradition says that
while only God can create life, God
has charged humans with doing
everything possible to preserve it.
The letter included the words, "I
have put before you this day life and
death. Choose life, that you and
your children may live."
