(248) 851-CARS
(248) 851-2277

Appointed or elected positions:
Southfield Library Board, 1998-2001.
Top issue facing Southfield: Providing
all residents with a place to congregate. I
plan to initiate discussion to determine
the needs and desirability of a
senior/teen/community center.
Jewish community impact: The Jewish
community has set the standard for fam-
ily life. You have always contributed and
enriched Southfield through education-
al, cultural and social activism. The
Jewish community can best impact the
city by staying in Southfield. We need
you in the city to continue being as
active and influential as you have been.

SIDNEY LANTZ, incumbent
Age and Birth Place:
81, New York City
Occupation: Southfield
city councilman
Family: Divorced, 3 adult children
Resident: 36 years
Education: City-College of New York
Elected and appointed positions:
Southfield Police and Fire Civil Service
Commission, 1977-83; City Council,
elected 1983.
Top issue facing Southfield: Maintain
the balance of diversity. We must pro-
mote our city to be the home of all cul-
tures equally and create a city govern-
ment to address all concerns of all our
people and a city government that repre-
sents all our people.
Jewish community impact: The Jewish
community in Southfield continues to
be a unifying force to keep Southfield
culturally diverse. The Jewish communi-
ty is a stable segment of our city. I
believe the Jewish community's impact
on Southfield will be positive and show
some growth in the future.

NIDA SAMONA, incumbent
Age and Birth Place: 36, Baghdad, Iraq
Occupation: Assistant prosecuting attor-
ney, Macomb County
Family: Married, 2 children (2 years,
and 1 month old)
Resident: 8 years
Education: Juris doctorate, Detroit
College of Law, 1991; B.A. business
adminsitration and English literature,
Marygrove College (Detroit), 1987.
Appointed or elected positions: presi-
dent, City Council, elected 2000; presi-
dent pro-tempore, 1998-99; council-
woman, city council, 1997-2001; City
Planning Commission, 1996-97; Total
Living Commission, 1992-96.
Top issue facing Southfield: The man-
ner by which the city undertakes rede-
velopment, both in the more urban areas
and in the more rural west side. I will
continue to look at each project on a

Southfield Primary Vote

case by case basis, weighing the interests
of residents in the surrounding neigh-
borhoods and the over-all impact on
the entire city.
The balance between low, moderate
and high-grade housing, as well as the
balance between commercial and resi-
dential is a tenuous one, as 2/3's of the
city's tax base is commercial.
Jewish community impact: With the
new wave of immigration, coming
from the former Soviet Union for
example, the Jewish community is
reinvigorating our city. Families are
moving in that are both hopeful in
what this country has to offer for the
future, while at the same time not
relinquishing cultural and religious
standards.

JOAN SEYMOUR
Age and Birth Place:
57, Birmingham.
Occupation: Semi-retired
business executive in process
of establishing new company.
Family: Single, 2 grown children
Resident: 28 years
Education: Wayne State University,
Detroit, four years, political science
and business; College of William and
Mary; Rockhurst College; various
seminars.
Elected and appointed positions:
City Council, 1993-99
Top issue facing Southfield:
Maintaining the high quality of life
now enjoyed by our residents. The
focus must be on continuing to
improve and upgrade. Older commer-
cial areas need to be revitalized.
During my six years as a city council
member, I successfully fought to pre-
serve open space and protect our
neighborhoods. Recognizing that our
businesses pay over 60 percent of our
property taxes, I have, and will contin-
ue to, push for redevelopment of com-
mercial areas and make sure we keep
our office buildings full. Vigilence and
total commitment will keep us strong.
Future Jewish community: The Jewish
community has always played a very
significant role in the history and life of
Southfield. Their future impact is up to
them. If they choose to stay and stay
involved, they will continue to play a
significant role in public life, political
life, and the cultural life of the city.
Southfield has a rich cultural her-
itage and a strong current cultural base
comprised of many ethnic, racial, and
religious groups. The Jewish commu-
nity in particular has reached out to
other groups and should continue to
help us all in our efforts to work
together for the common good.
