arney Broner was both hum-
ble and persistent.
He lived for his family
and was devoted to Minnie,
his wife of 65 years, said his daughter,
Risha Broner Stern.
He was always for the little guy, too,
ready to help an aspiring businessper-
son get established. "Whatever good
you do, you'd ger back in spades," he
would say.
And it was his own tenaciousness
that helped establish his glove business
during the Depression.
Mr. Broner, 89, of West
Bloomfield, died Aug 5 of a stroke.
LILYAN SHAPIRO ALPERN, 86,
of East Liverpool, Ohio, died Aug. 9.
She is survived by her sons and
daughter-in-law, Dr. Michael and
Ada Alpern of Pt. Charlotte, Fla.,
Jack Alpern of East Liverpool, Ohio;
five grandchildren; sisters, Peggy
Cole of Southfield, Ruth Weiss of
Southfield and Sylvia Stern of
Southfield. Mrs. Alpern was the
beloved wife of the late Dr. Mike
Alpern; dear sister of the late Harry
Shapiro, the late Gloria Kief and the
late Ben Stanton.
Interment in Ohio. Contributions
may be made to a charity of one's
choice. This announcement was
placed at the request of the family by
the Ira Kaufman Chapel.
YETTA BASKIN, 94, of Farmington
Hills, died Aug. 12.
She is survived by her dear cousins,
Donald and Carole Pomerantz of
Delray Beach, Fla.; many loving nieces
and nephews. She was the beloved
Politics and history were his love
and he had planned to train as a histo-
ry reacher, but family obligations inter-
ceded after the death of his mother.
He went into business with his
father, Harry Broner, who had a stand
outside Ford's Highland Park plant,
selling snacks and supplies, including
work gloves. After production switched
to the Rouge plant, Mr. Broner and
his father established the Broner Glove
Company in 1933, selling to retailers
and eventually to industry.
Mr. Broner worked hard to estab-
lish the business, visiting prospective
customers repeatedly until resistance
broke down.
"He's not the kind of guy who gave
up," said son David Broner, who
joined the firm in 1961.
"My dad was the hardest working
guy you could ever imagine," he
added, "and he wouldn't cheat anyone
out of a penny."
Broner Glove became a successful
national supplier of gloves, hats and
safety items, moving from Highland
Park to Detroit, then Ferndale, Troy
and finally Auburn Hills. Today, the
industrial supply business is known as
Broner Glove and Safety while Broner
wife of the late Irvin Baskin.
Graveside services were held at
Machpelah Cemetery. Contributions
may be made to a charity of one's

DENA BERLIN, 81, of Southfield,
died Aug. 11. For 32 years, she was a
secretary for Railway Express. She
was also a member of Temple Israel
and volunteered with the Jewish
Vocational Service and Country Day
School.
Ms. Berlin is survived by her nieces
and nephews, Sharon and Sol Cohen,
Sidney and Peggy Berlin; great-
nephews and great-nieces, Michael
and Nancy Cohen, Steven and Sarah
Cohen, Lonny and Suzy Cohen;
great-great-nieces and nephews.
Interment at Machpelah
Cemetery. Contributions may be
made to Temple Israel and Beaumont
Hospice. Arrangements by Ira
Kaufman Chapel.
Inc. is the retail supply arm. Mr.
Broner was a past president of the
National Industrial Glove Distributors
Association.
Mr. Broner's tenaciousness also ben-
efited the Jewish community. A long-
time member of the Anti-Defamation
League, he would infiltrate meetings of
suspect groups prior to and during
World War II, checking for anti-
Semitism.
Mr. Broner was a president of the
Detroit Lodge of B'nai B'rith, a Probus
Club "Man of the Year" and a member
of Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
But his overriding concern was for
his family, including his nine grand-
children and nine great-grandchildren.
His devotion to his wife was so strong,
that when his health was failing he
welcomed life-extending procedures,
saying, "I just want one more hour
with Minnie."
Bob Broner, eldest grandchild, said,
"He was our teacher, role model, men-
tor and friend, and he conducted his
life and business with the utmost
integrity. He taught us how to treat
your spouse, children and grandchil-
dren."
Added daughter Risha, "He was
honest, humble, patient, kind and so
sharp. All these qualities made up our
dad."
Mr. Broner is survived by his wife,
Minnie Broner; son and daughter-in-
law, David and Lily Broner of West
Bloomfield; daughters and sons-in-law,
Sheryl Broner and Dr. Milton Gordon
of West Bloomfield, Risha Broner and
Dr. Joseph Stern of Florida; grandchil-
dren, Robert and Kim Broner, Jim and
Mimi Broner, Stephanie Broner and I.
Matthew Miller, Karen and Howard
Rosenberg, Daniel and Corinne
Gordon, Joel Satovsky, Jonathan and
Stacey Satovsky, Jonathan Stern,
Andrea Stern; and great-grandchildren,
Joshua, Sarah, Sam, Zachary and
Benjamin Broner, Jeremy Rosenberg,
Blake and Reid Gordon, Adam
Satovsky.
He was the son of the late Harry
and Sadie Demb Broner and stepson
of the late Goldie Sugar Broner, and
brother of the late Lillian Bilinski.
Interment was at Machpelah

York, died June 9.
She is survived by her brother,
Albert Blatnikoff of Farmington Hills;
