CD,

I t helps to have Daimler-Chrysler
on your side.
That's what Hillel Day School
of Metropolitan Detroit discov-
ered last year, when the automaker's
Chrysler and Jeep brands took over
major sponsorship of the school's annu-
al golf classic.
"Roughly speaking, we netted
about double what we'd done in the
past year," said Jim Berger, who was
instrumental in arranging Chrysler
Jeep's participation.
The 2000 Hillel Day School Golf
Classic brought in about $35,000 for
the Farmington Hills school, while the
1999 event netted about $18,000, he
said.
"Only about a third of the increase
came directly from Chrysler," Berger
said. "But with Chrysler involvement,
everyone stepped up getting spon-
sors."
This year's tournament, to take
place Monday, Sept. 10, at Tam
O'Shanter Golf Club in West
Bloomfield, is Hillel's sixth annual golf
event. In addition to Chrysler Jeep, at
least a dozen other sponsors have
signed up so far.
Steve Schlafer serves as chairman of
the golf classic committee. In addition
to Berger, other committee members
are Michael Cutler, Dr. Michael
Dorman, Otto Dube, Dr. Ron
Goodman, Jay Greenspan, Art

Indianer, Ashley Israel, Jeff Tackel and
Dr. Howard Yerman.
Hillel's fund-raising chair is Natalie
Newman.
Daimler-Chrysler provides major
sponsorship to numerous educational
and community events, including the
city of Pontiac's annual Arts, Beats and
Eats festival. However, the Hillel golf
classic is the only one associated with
a Jewish organization.
There will be several vehicles on
display at the tournament, Berger said,
including Jeep's newest product, the
Jeep Liberty.
A 20-year Chrysler employee,
Berger is the company's director for
future program financial analysis. He
and his wife, Karen, who is a Hillel
graduate, have two children at the
school: Halide, who enters third grade
later this month, and Josh, who will
be a first-grader.
Berger said he's not much of a
golfer, but he's happy to putter
around. "I bought two foursomes for
my friends," he said. "If somebody
doesn't show up, I'll play."
