X YOU FEEL

the freedom of retirement? It's like having the wind at

your back. At the Heatherwood, you can enjoy all the

comforts of independent living. Now you can do all the

Jewish historical markers and locations.
Cantor admits she would have pre-
ferred a more exciting title for the
book, but, she said, all books in the
series had to fir a specific format:
identical size; under 100 pages and
only 15 pictures. On the cover is a
photo of the 1915 Young Men's
Hebrew Association basketball team.
Cantor captures the struggles and tri-
umphs of Michigan's Jews, many of
them real pioneers, as they established
farms, businesses and synagogues, spark-
ing residential and commercial develop-
ment in the state. Quickly multiplying
the Jewish population was a large influx
of European immigrants in the late
1800s and early 1900s.
"In their quest to build strong com-
munities, the Jewish settlers also helped
create the foundations of the Michigan
we know today" she said.
She describes how the early Jewish
peddlers ventured into the far reaches of
the U.P. to sell cloth, pots and pans, and
pins and needles to employees of the
lumber and mining camps, providing
competition to the company stores.
Small groups of Jews settled in northern
Michigan communities, banding togeth-
er to worship and keep the holidays, get-
ting kosher meat by train from Chicago.
"There was always at least one all
purpose Jewish leader in each communi-
ty who was a rabbi, mohel and every-
thing else," she said.
Cantor covers the beginning of the
auto industry and the labor movement,
discussing truck company owners Max
and Morris Grabowsky and Bernard
Ginsburg; Meyer Prentis, who rose from
bookkeeper to treasurer of General
Motors; architect Albert Kahn, who
designed several Ford Motor Company
plants; A.E. Barit, who was Hudson
Motor Car Co. president for 18 years.
Myra Wolfgang is described as a
tough union organizer who worked hard
for labor legislation and women's rights.
Cantor deals honestly with questions
of anti-Semitism and prejudice, boasts
about sports heroes like Hank
Greenberg, philanthropists Max Fisher
and William Davidson, politicians Carl
and Sander Levin, and gives a tribute to
David Hermelin, the late former ambas-
sador to Norway, including an excellent
photo of him by his wife Doreen.
The book is available at major local
bookstores.
