My only complaint is with "Shabbat Is A
Comin'." This song features Jewish lyrics
and a spiritual-style tune. (Imagine singing,
"Welcome, Shabbatr to the music of "Ole
Man River.") This combination just doesn't
work.
Still, this is not one of those CDs that
you'll buy, listen to once and put away. You
can, and will, love hearing it many times,
especially as you're getting ready for
Shabbat.
Give credit to Cantor Zim, coo, for
knowing not to say God's name, but
rather "Elokeinu," while reciting
Shabbat prayers on the tape. Very few
Jewish recording artists seem to know
liptea t, fun ,
that an actual blessing should never
En t erizitimi ,
be recited except at the proper time,
& Edlic atimal
such as when one is really lighting
Shabbat candles.

Shabbat Is Here: Children Explore
Shabbat Through Music by Paul Zim.

Shabbat is here, and so is a great new CD
for children. Featuring Cantor Paul Zim
and a chorus of children, Shabbat Is Here
isn't the usual collection of Shabbat songs,
performed pleasantly but predictably. These
are mostly new, dance-along, easy-to-sing
numbers that children 2-8 will love.
Especially terrific are "Challah Days" and
"Shabbat Shalom," kick-back-your-feet-
and-dance, bouncy numbers that Elvis him-
self would have been proud to record (and,
after all, the King wore both a cross and a
Star of David, so he wouldn't be refused
entrance to heaven "on a technicality").
Even the familiar tunes, like "L'cha Dodi"
and "Oseh Shalom," are so charmingly and
freshly performed here that you don't mind
hearing them yet again. And "Shabbat
Shalom, Shabbat Shalom," by Joni Klein-
Higger, is lovely; you'll find yourself playing
it over and over.

You will love the photographs and
instructions in this book. Everything is
colorful, bright and easy-to-read. The
book design is perfect for parents who
enjoy making crafts with their children,
