A New Approach to Creativity

Songs, Stories,
Spirit Of Israel

The talented teens of the Friendship

gram was developed in her living
room. Her brother Mark drove the
Caravan in 1973, and ended up
marrying one of the scouts. Mark
and his wife Anat now reside in
Israel with their three children.
At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, 10
members of the Israeli Scout
Friendship Caravan will entertain
Detroiters with Hebrew, Yiddish and
English songs and dances at the Katz
Outdoor Pool and Plaza at the West
Bloomfield JCC. This performance .
is open only to JCC members.
A public performance will be at
7:30 p.m. that night at Charlotte
Rothstein Park, located behind the
Oak Park JCC. Admission is free.
The Detroit performancea are spon-
sored by the Jewish Community
Center, Jewish Community Council
and the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's
Neighborhood Project.
"The purpose of this program,"
said Roisman, "is for Americans to
see young Israeli teens who want to
bring a little piece of Israel and spir-
it to America." rfi

n 1973, two men created a
program that would turn into
an energetic international
learning experience.
Mort Coles and Dan Koren of
Cleveland altered the former Israeli
Scout Friendship Caravan, which
brought Israeli teens to America,
into a new and exciting form that
showcases Israeli talent and offers a
chance for interaction.
Prior to 1973, Israeli teens could
be sent to Jewish boy scout camps in
the United States for the entire sum-
mer. The teens benefited from the
experiences, but the Israelis had no
opportunity to see the community
and tell of their lives in Israel.
So instead, Coles and Koren sent
10 talented teens — five girls and
five boys — throughout America,
singing, dancing and telling their
personal stories about life in Israel.
Among the Caravan's stops this sum-
mer are camps, schools, U.S. Navy
bases, Jewish community centers,
hospitals and nursing
homes.
