Being a former
medical doctor, the
health factor plays
an important role
for Shivaji, who
didn't just talk
about not having
good Indian food
and service at a
place he visited ... Shivaji just went
out and opened the kind of restaurant
he wanted ... This is Ruchi Indian
Cuisine ... his dream of authentic
Indian dining.
WHILE A FULL-TIME television
and radio sportscaster, Jim Berk would
tell of the injuries and out-of-shape
conditions that many times plagued
some of the athletes he would talk
about.
It probably bugged Jim because he
has worked out regularly ... swim-
ming, weightlifting, basketball, etc.,
since he was 10 years old ... and used
to watch Jack LaLanne on TV, wishing
he could be like him.
Even Jim's dad, Sam Berk, has been
an inspiration to him ... "He'd take
me to the YMCA because we didn't
have a Jewish Community Center in
Lincoln, Neb.," says Jim ... Until a
few- years ago, Sam would run one to
two miles daily ... but an ankle injury
forced him into stationary biking ...
which Sam does religiously ... even
though he is 92.
With all this, it is little wonder that
Jim has switched professions ... and
although still doing some part-time
sportscasting at Channels 50 and 62,
is now a full-fledged personal trainer.
"I really enjoy my new career," says
Jim. "My stress level has diminished
and I'm getting a great sense of grad-
tude helping people achieve their fit-
ness goals."
When one of his clients, Allen
Schwartz, "the singing window wash-
er," tells of losing weight and not feel-
ing sore in the morning, Jim feels that
he has made a difference and revels in
the great feeling it gives him.
As a sportscaster turned sports train-
er, Jim not only knows what he is talk-
ing about ... but puts his trainer
knowledge into practice lending a
hand to others•... something he has
always wanted to do ... and it is an
immense emotion for him.
MENOPAUSE OPEN is the name
given for a group that began 25 years
ago when five couples formed to
spend a weekend together ... golfing
and enjoying being with each other.
Today, the 10 have grown to 60
members, covering four generations.
