to do everything we can to stop
the violence and create an atmos-
phere where we can all live togeth-
er.
This is the only time the
Hermelin family has allowed an
award to be named in honor of
the ambassador, who died in
November 2000.
The Detroit Seeds of Peace
board was unanimous in choosing
Nasser to receive the award, says
Bryce Sandler, the group's event
coordinator.
"Mr. Nasser has been active in a
number of organizations all these
years, building coalitions between
different businesses and people of
different cultures," Sandler says.
"That is what, in a slightly differ-
ent way, we do at Seeds of Peace."
Because Nasser is not directly
involved in many community
groups, his immediate interest in
the Seeds cause was even more
appreciated, says board member
Ariela Shani of Rochester Hills.
1 acques Nasser's stature in the
community is very important, and
his being of Lebanese descent
shows that the cause is supported
not only by Jews but by members
of every ethnic group," Shani says.
Co-chairs of the gala are Tim
Attala of Northville and Joel Jacob
of West Bloomfield, both mem-
bers of the Seeds national board.
Journal co-chairs are Shani and
her husband Asa, along with
Helen and Tarilc Daoud of
Bloomfield Hills.
Lisa and Hannan Lis of
Farmington Hills chair the local
Seeds of Peace chapter.

But, after the heated Middle East
meeting ends, 16-year-old Adham
Khorazaty of Egypt is eager to com-
ment.
"Every culture was brought up on its
own history," he says. "You can't
change somebody's mind by stating
your feelings. We have that written,
right on the board."
Khorazaty says there will never be
one correct answer to the complex
problems tackled by his coexistence
group. If some people want to call the
area Palestine and others Israel, he
says, that's not a matter to fight over.
"What's wrong with saying it's
Palestine? They're not saying it to hurt
your feelings. Not here at camp. We
are trying to live in harmony and
peace.
Adham Rishmawi, 19, is visiting
Seeds camp between semesters at
Indiana's Earlham College. Born in
Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem, he was a
third-grader when he saw Israelis arrest
his father. Three tear gas grenades were
thrown into his school.
"The vision and sound of those days
will always be with me," he says.
When he first came to camp in
1997, Rishmawi says he was filled
with anger, unable to understand how
his parents could be peace activists.
"I came here and I finally met with
what my parents were talking about. I
got to see the human, teen-age side of
the Israelis who were here, the side
that likes girls, music," Rishmawi says.

One Man's Vision

Coexistence sessions are just one part
of camp. Playing sports, eating,
singing, touring and bunking with
young people from other cultures
builds the human relationships so
often missing from the lives of people
from opposing cultures.
Seeds of Peace founder John Wallach
called his book about the Seeds phe-
nomenon The Enemy Has A Face.
"Accepting the 'other' as nonthreat-
ening is the initial goal when the
youngsters arrive at Seeds of Peace," he
writes. "When that happens, a sense of
community begins to be created that
gives everyone a stake in its welfare
and survival."
Wallach, a newspaperman whose
career included stints at CNN (Cable
News Network), the New York Times
News Service and Hearst Newspapers,
started Seeds of Peace in 1993.
Although he had long been desperate-
ly unhappy about the violence in the
Middle East, the immediate impetus for
the camp's formation was the bombing
