"When I came to live in Los Angeles, I knew that it was a company town, and I loved being involved with creative [projects]," Adelson says. "Naturally, I was drawn to the movies here. "I was in advertising first and became a producer at a big agency. I did Chrysler commercials, and that was a great way to learn. Everything has to get told in one minute." - When Adelson decided to make her move into movies 12 years ago, she aligned herself with a mentor, Michael Brandman. She and her husband had agreed to keep their work separate for the integrity of their marriage, and their professional paths have not crossed. "Michael Brandman made a deal with me," she recalls. "If I could sell a movie, we would produce it together. I sold Shoot First to NBC, and we made it." After working with Brandman for two years, Adelson joined producer Roger Gimbel at Carolco-Gimbel, which later became Gimbel-Adelson, and made Chernobyl: the Final Warning for TNT and Desperate Rescue for NBC. Under the banner of Orly Adelson Productions, she has worked with many titles and many television networks, including One True Love for CBS, The Truth About Jane for Lifetime, Ultimate Deception for USA and Freefall for the Fox Family Channel. A documentary, Keeper of the Light, returned her to Israel for a short time. Working with Oscar-winning director Chuck Workman, she helped explore the relationships between Arabs and Jews. "I was very lucky that a wonderful guy wanted me to do a piece about Israel," says Adelson, a former Peace Now board member who is developing a movie about the Munich Olympics with ESPN. Although the Adelson children — Kori, 14, and Jonathan, 9 — love watching movies, they are kept distant from behind-the-scenes involvement because both parents want their children to find their own professional passions. With her mom, dad and other close family members still living in Israel, Adelson tries to travel there as often as possible. She appreciates having rela- tives in Michigan, where she visits the family of her aunt, artist Eileen Aboulafia of Farmington Hills. Aunt and niece recently enjoyed an exotic getaway in Turkey. "When I opened my own company five years ago, there were only two women producers taking care of film financinab , and I was one of them," says Adelson, whose upcoming proj- ects include a TBS movie about reality TV. "There are more women today, but I wouldn't say many more. "Each film that I do is interesting or challenging to me in a different way, and I have done a range from very liter- ary movies to those that are just exciting and fun. The minute I hear about [an intriguing] project, I know the way to make it. I love people, and I really enjoy what I do and the interaction. You can't do it alone in television.
