CHIROPRACTIC
Is pleased to announce Dr. Adam Apfelblat
as Associate Chiropractor
On support for him over
the years by Jewish audiences ...
"The Jewish culture — people who
are Jewish — have certain cultural
habits that they've formed and one of
those habits is an appreciation of the-
ater and music. They like that very
much. And since I'm in show busi-
ness, I would fall into that category
of things that would interest them.
"Culturally speaking, I was raised
in a Jewish household and in addi-
tion to the negative religious side of
it, I was also taught respect for books
and respect for learning and respect
for the higher professions: medicine,
law and teaching.
'An interest in films and theater
and classical music — these are cul-
tural things that one does associate
with values that are promulgated by
Jewish families.
"And I think that's a good thing."
On Jewish audiences having
a sense of ownership
"There may be [such a feeling].
But that's false. I don't feel that kin-
ship that way. I don't feel that I
should feel the pain of a Jewish per-
son any more than the pain of a gen-
tile person. It's not right."
if he could change his looks ...
"Well, I guess I wouldn't necessarily
want to be a big muscular guy, but
its nice to be gorgeous whether you're
male or female — assuming you don't
lose whatever else you have.
"But [appearance] is also a big sta-
ple for comedians. You always see
the floor thinking, 'This is too funny."'
Berkley got her chance to play a
Jewish girl in the independent film The
Taxman, with Joe Pantoliano. Portraying
a Russian Jewish girl in Brighton Beach,
Berkley voices half her lines in Russian
(with English subtitles) and half in
English with a Russian accent.
She just finished The Shipment,
another film with Modine, and is slat-
ed to go into another feature film at
the end of the summer.
Berkley doesn't rule out more stage
work, either. While it's doubtful Lenny
will be heading to New York — Izzard
prefers his improvisational stand-up
over the confines of a scripted play —
she "would love to do Broadway, defi-
nitely, a musical or a straight play
"But I'd love to use my dancing expe-
rience," says Berkley, who gave up ballet
for modeling and acting early in her

Jackie Gleason always making the fat
jokes and Jack Benny with the cheap
jokes and WC. Fields doing jokes
about his big red nose. The physical
part of it is part of the whole package
that we joke about."
On his movie making style ...
"I think I've gotten slightly, slightly;
technically better over the years, but I
mean you have to be a fool not to. I've
made so many movies. Just by sheer
quantity, you get better at the technique.
"But I still function now the way I
functioned when I first started —
and I've been very blessed to have
backing: the idea I want to make, I
make. [I make] the film that strikes
my fancy at the time.
"I think I'm doing the same kind
of jokes now that I did when I was
younger. I really do."

"This is a personal kvetch of mine.
I feel that way, I guess, being a prod-
uct of the movies of the '40s.
"We saw how people lived in the
movies and then you saw your own
life, and it always seemed to me —
this has been an incessant theme in
pictures of mine — that reality is just
unpleasant and difficult and tragic
and awful for everybody.
"NI could change the structure of
existence, I would do it. I can see a bet-
ter way to live for everybody But within
the drab limitations that we're all sad-
dled with, yes, Eve been very lucky." D.
career. (As a teenager, she performed in
The Nutcracker and Swan Lake with
principal dancers from American Ballet
Theatre and the New York City Ballet in
performances staged by Dance Detroit.)
She recently used her musical talents
in "Divas Simply Singing," an L.A.
benefit for the fight against AIDS,
where she sang and danced in a rendi-
tion of "Fever." "It was a real kind of
performance piece," says Berkley, smil-
ing. "It was fun.
She's having fun in her personal life,
too. "I have a wonderful love," she
says, though she declines to give her
boyfriend's name. "He's an actor and
an artist — and he's Jewish." El
