GARFIELD & MARKS
Spirituality
Jews who are blind in the Torah
service, the obligation to educate
children with special needs as well
as the requirement to make syna-
gogues accessible to those with
handicaps.
He says that even though reli-
gious institutions are exempt from
accessibility laws in the Americans
with Disabilities Act, "the question
is our internal obligation to the
handicapped."
He also will include an update on
conversations with representatives of
the Jewish deaf community.
The series, co-sponsored by
JARC and the AJE's Lifelong
Learning program and Opening the
Doors program, will be audiotaped
for inclusion in the Eilu
Eilu
lending library.
The final of the four self-con-
tained sessions will be a panel dis-
cussion moderated by Parker. He
says it will be "geared to looking at
where we are now and where we
should be heading as a community
concerning providing services for
individuals with developmental dis-
abilities."
His hope is for participants to
include "parents, mental health and
agency professionals and teachers as
well as anyone simply interested in
learning more about the topic."
The series, Kaplan says, is geared
to "anyone who would like to learn
about the evolution of the Jewish
tradition's approach towards persons
with disabilities — whether because
of a personal or professional interest
in the topic or simply because of a
desire to expand their Jewish knowl-
edge on a subject with contempo-
rary implications."
