ORT, anacronym in America for the
OrganizatiC4i for Education Resources and
Technological Training, provides vocational
and technical training to close to "00,000
students at 800 schools in 60 countries,
including three schools in the United
States. ORT was founded in 1880 in St.
Petersburg, Russia, when the Jewish com-
munity banded together to help needy
Jews.
After the convention, Safirsztein and
Schlossberg began a tour of several U.S.
cities to help spread the story about the
work of CRT's worldwide operations,
including a visit to the Detroit area to meet
local ORT supporters and contributors. A
Russian ORT student and teacher original-
ly were supposed to make the trip, but visa
problems forced them to cancel. Another
Argentine student and teacher then were
selected, but their passports had expired.
Safirsztein and Schlossberg were happy
to pinch-hit at the last minute, although
neither is a newcomer to America.
Safirsztein has been to Miami and visited
