ll or nearly 80 years, the Isaac
Agree Downtown Synagogue
has been known as a congre-
gation open to all Jews, regardless of
their ability to pay.
With a membership that has dwin-
dled through the years, Carole Katz
of Southfield, synagogue-board sec-
retary, says sadly, "We are in dire
financial straits. We will close by
next spring if we cannot generate
extra income."
To help generate funds, an estate
sale has been planned for 10 a.m. to
5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the
Southfield Centre for the Arts (for-
mer B'nai David synagogue build-
ing), where the congregation will
hold High Holiday services this year.
"Our dues are $60 a year because
that is the way the founders of the
synagogue wanted it," Katz says of
Nathan and Charles Agree. "We feel
having a presence in the city, given
the rebirth of Wayne State
University, the downtown area is an
important outreach for the Jewish
community and the metropolitan
area."
"The synagogue provides a place
of worship for those unaffiliated or
those uncomfortable not being able
to get a ticket for the holidays," says
Jack Felsot, synagogue president.
"For probably 50 years, we've con-
tracted outside facilities for the
Jewish holidays. We open the doors,
take care of expenses and don't sell
tickets. We offer a place to go to
observe the Jewish holidays."
The synagogue is seeking dona-
tions to the estate sale. Items can
include vintage clothing, furniture,
jewelry, working watches, dishes, sil-
ver, flatware, glassware sets, vintage
toys, area rugs, dolls, tablecloths and
other linens, sheet music, decorative
garden items, autographed memora-
bilia, art work.
A licensed appraiser will be avail-
able to offer a letter stating the
worth of items as a tax deduction.
For information on the estate sale
or on items to be donated, call the
synagogue at (313) 961-9328.
