Eilu V'Eilu Offers
Holiday Learning

Eilu
Eilu, the adult Jewish learn-
ing partnership of the Michigan
Conservative movement and a recip-
ient of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit's Max M.
Fisher Jewish Community
Foundation, will offer "Elul-a Time
to Prepare," its annual set of classes
on themes relating to the Days of
Awe, geared to adult and teen learn-
ers.
"Beit Midrash for the Days of
Awe" is a four-part Wednesday night
series co-spon-
sored by the
Jewish Academy
of Metro Detroit
and the Jewish
Community
Center of
Metropolitan
Detroit, which
will take place at the JCC in West
Bloomfield on Aug. 22, Aug. 29,
Sept. 5 and Sept. 12, from 7- 9 p.m.
Judaism and Disabilities" is a
four-part Thursday night series co-
sponsored by Jewish Association for
Residential Care and the Lifelong
Learning and Opening the Doors
departments of the Agency for
Jewish Education of Metropolitan
Detroit (AJE). The series will take
place at JARC offices, 3031
Northwetern Highway, Farmington
Hills, Aug. 23, 30, Sept. 6 and 13,
from 7:30-9 p.m.
In addition, there will be a num-
ber of free, walk-in learning events
at local Borders bookstores on High
Holiday themes. Dates, instructors,
and topics will be announced.
Rabbis Lauren Eichler Berkun,
Lee Buckman and Hal Greenwald
will be lead instructors for "Beit
Midrash for the Days of Awe." They
will explore texts relating to the
Days of Awe, using chevrutah (learn-
ing in pairs). Each session will be
self-contained and can be attended
independently. There will be sepa-
rate Beit Midrash learning groupings
for students who prefer English-only
text and those who are comfortable
learning with Hebrew as well as
English text. Tuition is $12 per ses-
sion or $40 for the series.
There is no charge for Jewish edu-
cators, including NIRIM and JEEEP
participants, Jewish communal
agency staffers or high school stu-

dents. College students receive a 50
percent tuition discount. Advance

will be the featured speaker at the
second session.
The series will confront some
uncomfortable aspects of our reli-
gious heritage and look to the future
by engaging learners in a communal
heshbon ha-nefesh (self-evaluation
and assessment), with the goal of
creating a more caring community
in New Year 5762 and beyond. The
fourth and final session in the series
will be in the form of a town meet-
ing and panel discussion moderated
by Dr. Parker and joined by Nancie
Furgang, special needs director at
the JCC; Robyn Glickman, K-2
principal at Hillel Day School and
director of AJE's Efshar special edu-
cation program; Joyce Keller, execu-
tive director of JARC; and Dr.
David Loeffler, an activist, teacher
and volunteer in the field of disabili-
ties and parent of a young man with
autism.
Each session in the series can be
attended independently. Tuition is
$10 per session or $36 for the series,
with no charge for Jewish educators,
Jewish communal agency staffers, or
high school students. College stu-
dents receive a 50 percent tuition
discount. Advance registration is
