tourists (who are a source of success for
kosher restaurants in other cities) to
not being used to having them.
"We have been limited for so long,
it's not the norm for people to expect
to ear out," Rabbi Krupnik says. The
only places that seem to be doing a
nice turnover on a daily basis to be
profitable are Jerusalem Pizza and
Unique [Kosher Carryout]."

In Sweden it's not
polite to brag.
But we're not
in Sweden.

Need For Kosher Eating

Kohn leaves the restaurant business
confident he was able to successfully,
and consistently, supply patrons with
"great kosher food and great service."
Proud of the four-star rating award-
ed by general restaurant reviewers,
who scored him without the kosher
tag, he saw La Difference as a bridge
between different segments of the
Jewish community as well as a fre-
quent stop for non-Jewish clientele.
With no remorse, he says he is also
comfortable in the resignation that it
is "time to move in a new direction.
Ifs time for someone else to step up,
he says, adding that he'll gladly advise
others of the pitfalls to avoid. "I am will-
ing to make my experience in the restau-
rant business available to anybody"
"We, as restaurant owners, are, in
part, a community service," Ehrenreich
says of those seeking a place for a fami-
ly gathering, a lunch meeting or to
take a break from cooking.
"The greatest message we can send
is to ask the community to support
what you have left," says Ehrenreich,
whose restaurant has been packed for
lunch and dinner since the closing of
La Difference.
"Our restaurants also need extra
business. We need the showers, sheva
brochus, Kiddushes inside the restau-
rant or outside. We need professionals
and people working in offices to call us
for carryout — Jews and non-Jews," he
says with a sentiment echoed by Rabbi
Krupnick, Kohn and Rita Jerome of
Unique Kosher Catering in Oak Park.
Even though he maintains he is fin-
ished with the business, Kohn says,
"Restaurants are not only needed in
Detroit, but can succeed. I'm sad that
we weren't able to succeed and am
hopeful that my experience will bene-
fit someone else."
There's proof his food service life
goes on. Kohn says after the last diner
left La Difference on its final night,
his staff cleared away the plates,
cleaned the kitchen and then, prepar-
ing for the next stage, began to
arrange the tables for an early August
private party. ❑
