We had more success this year than
last because we played better as a unit,
with great camaraderie. We spent a
great deal of time off the field togeth-
er.
Before each playoff tournament, we
went to the Lodge restaurant in Keego
Harbor, playing pool, video games,
and enjoying dinner with one another.
That brought us closer and that trans-
lated onto the field.
We had a few close calls along the
way. Against Birmingham Groves in
the district semifinal, down 5-2, we
made a comeback to tie it at 5. Groves
took the lead in the 6th inning on a
steal of home. But we scored four
runs in the final inning to take the
game.
In the district final, we defeated
Berkley 5-0 behind Gary Rosenberg's
grandslam home run and no-hit
pitching.
In regionals, we beat Waterford
Kettering 4-3 and Milford 11-1 in the
championship game.
The state quarterfinal game was a
huge test. With only one hit the entire
game, we beat Monroe 2-1 to advance
to the state-semifinals in Battle Creek.
Great defensive plays throughout the
game were the keys to victory.
Our roadblock came versus Gross
Pointe South in the semifinal game.
Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the first
with the bases loaded and none out,
we could not score further. South
scored three runs in the fourth, taking
a 5-4 lead.
But Gary Rosenberg and Matt
Waskerwitz led off the bottom of the
7th inning with singles. Morris, who
was 3 for 3, attempted to lay down a
bunt, but was unsuccessful. Lamb hit
a deep fly ball to right center that was
caught and Rosenberg moved to third
on the fly ball. Brad Robbins came up
with two out and runners on first and
third, but hit a hard grounder that
ended the game. Gross Pointe South
went on to become state champions.
The loss was hard to take at first.
To the five seniors who will no longer
wear a West Bloomfield uniform, it
was a wonderful season, but the loss
will be tough to remember.
To the 14 returning players, it gives
us added incentive to work even
harder.
