hen we talk about West
Bloomfield High
School baseball teams
years from now, the
2001 Lakers will come to my mind. I
was lucky enough to be a part of this
special season as the starting catcher.
Several other Jewish players who
were part of our winning team includ-
ed Aaron Cohen, Matt Chatlin, Sam
Grossman, Dan Horwitz, Gary
Rosenberg, Kevin Rosenberg and assis-
tant coach Matt Newman.
We finished with a 26-8 record, set-
ting the school record for most wins in
a season. Pat Watson and John Hodges
were our coaches. At the beginning of
the season, we set goals and we
reached and accomplished most of
them:
We finished second in the Oakland
Activities Association, won the district
championship, the regional champi-
onship, and the state quarterfinal
game.
This was the second time in school
history that the baseball team made it
this far. In 1983, West Bloomfield
defeated Midland Dow 19-3 to cap-
ture the state championship.
Months before the 2001 season, we

had open gym and worked out as a
team, trying to improve our game.
The off-season, both physically and
mentally, prepared us for the season
ahead. From start to finish, every play-
er contributed in any way possible.
Some players stood out. A huge
contribution came from someone we
didn't even expect to play, sophomore
Kevin Lamb, who transferred from
Orchard Lake St. Mary's high school.
He was initially told that he had to sit
out the baseball season because of the
transfer.
Pitching for West Bloomfield, Lamb
won 12, lost 1, and had a 1.86 earned
run average, garnering second team
All-State honors.
Another star was Gary Rosenberg.
Name a position and Rosenberg
played it for West Bloomfield this
year. He batted .487 with 50 runs bat-
ted in (the most in the state).
Rosenberg earned every possible
honor, including All-State Dream
Team.
Erik Morris, the son of former Tiger
great Jack Morris, was one of the lead-
ers both on and off the field. He bat-
ted .405 and made plays at third base
that were awesome. Morris, along with
Rosenberg, shortstop Sam Grossman
and centerfielder Mitch Brooks were
West Bloomfield's captains.
