house had left Canadian-
born singer k.d. lang
verklempt. "The men were
standing at the back of the room hold-
ing their testicles ... but I can under-
stand that," she told a reporter from
US Weekly. "If it was female circumci-
sion ... yeah, that would be a bad one."
That's how k.d. tang recently let her
fans in on a little secret. "Well, actual-
ly, I'm technically Jewish," she told the
magazine. "I'm Jewish on my mother's
side all the way down, but I was raised
Christian because we didn't know we
were Jewish until recently."
The performer, who has talked
about her lesbianism in the press,
deflected questions on any further reli-
gious details. "I'm part Russian Jew,
Icelandic, Sioux Indian, English, Irish
and Scottish. I'm a real mutt," she told
the magazine.
The singer's career — like her life —
has been full of surprises.
"Don't bet on anything," said lang,
who'll appear in concert Sunday, July
29, with Tony Bennett at Sterling
Height's Freedom Hill Amphitheatre.
But the singer-songwriter's devoted
fans have long regarded her as a sure
thing when it comes to musical excel-
lence in country, pop, torch songs and
anything else she wraps her heavenly
voice around.
