F
or Vancouver, British Columbia-based actor
Benson '-- immonds, last year's focus went from
winning a prestigious acting award for a film he
also wrote and produced, to creating a world-
wide program of meditation for peace in Israel.
Simmonds says creating the "Shma Peace Project: The
Power of One" was a natural continuation of Kabbatah
(Jewish mysticism) studies, which, he says, taught him
about being "proactive, about unity, risk-taking [and about]
trust."
The classes made him think about what he could do to
make an impact — or even create a miracle. He decided to
petition as many people as possible to recite the Shema at
the same time, with thought of Israeli peace.
Enlisting the help of a group of friends,
including Toronto-based entrepreneur David
Feldt who assisted throughout the project,
thousands of congregations and Jewish organ-
izations were informed about the plan. A
Web site was also created including a translit-
eration of the entire three paragraphs of the
Shema, which he describes as "one of the
Benson
most powerful prayers for healing, peace and
Simmonds
transformation."
Th, site also provides a time-zone chart
allowing participants from Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, to Zurich, Switzerland, to determine when to say
the prayer so they can recite it along with others worldwide.
In Detroit, that time falls at 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 4.
"We invite all Jews, whether they're at shul or not, to take
two minutes of their time to either say the Shema, or sim-
ply to meditate in their own way on sending peace to the
Middle East," Simmonds says.
"Also, I know that when you take a moment to think of
someone else, it comes back to you at least 100 times over,"
he says. "So I know that everyone who participates is get-
ting something out of it, regardless of the outcome of
peace. But I know," he says, "that it will affect peace as
well."
