quickly, but we both knew that the
`Ribs for Two' was the order of the
evening.
"At last, our waitperson took our
order and shuffled off to the kitchen.
Imagine our surprise when, right
under our noses, the group at the next
table was passing around a fifth of
Johnny Walker scotch, each taking a
healthy gulp.
"We must have been very obvious
with our stares, because moments
later, we were offered a hit from the
bottle. Caught off guard, I blurted
out, 'No thanks, I won't be 21 until
October.' This brought a hearty laugh
from all around who heard it, and I
turned a very bright shade of crimson.
"As fate would have it, just a decade
later, I had the Flaming Embers as an
advertising client. But I never forgot
my first meal there and the commo-
tion I caused."
BACK IN THE MID 1970s, when
Simons Michelson Zieve first started
handling the Big Boy account, Mort
Zieve tells of hearing an amusing inci-
dent at the Big Boy on Grand Circus
Park. "They had a customer order 111
Big Boys for carry-out. Or so they
thought," says Mort.
"The customer had handed in a list
to the waitress that looked like this
Slim Jim II, Big Boy III, Swiss Miss I.
What the customer wanted was two
Slim Jims, three Big Boys and one
Swiss Miss. The new cook at the Big
Boy interpreted it as 11 Slim Jims,
111 Big Boys and one Swiss Miss!
When the customer, who was waiting
for his carryout order, inquired as to
why it was taking so long he got the
reply, 'Well, it takes a while to make
111 Big Boys!' A quick halt was called,
although 52 Big Boys had already
been cooked. The manager got into
the act, went out into the park and
passed out 49 free Big Boys to sur-
prised Detroiters. So there was a
happy ending to the mix-up."
"THERE WAS A MOUSE in the
house!" tells Sandy Hermanoff of
Hermanoff Associates, advertising and
public relations. And no one even
jumped on the table at the prestigious
London Chop House some years back.
"The mouse was none other than the
real Mickey Mouse from Disneyland,
one of our clients, who was in Detroit
to celebrate his birthday. I was
Mickey's interpreter (Mickey didn't
talk) and we sat with a hungry table of
area travel writers who gulped their
food as Mickey did his yeses and nos.
Since Mickey didn't eat, he was literally
starving at the end of the lunch and
almost passed out when they brought
