OF 15 • WEST BLOOMFIELD • (248)855-3993 "I have decided to define as Jewish those motion pictures in which Judaism, a Jewish experience or simply a character's Jewish background plays a defi- nite role in the develop- ment of the story" writes author Joel Samberg. riter Joel Samberg, a graduate in journalism and theater from Hofstra University who usually writes for magazines, has writ- ten a book. It's about movies. Samberg likes movies — he likes them a lot. In Reel Jewish: A Century of Jewish Movies (Jonathan David Publishers; $22.95), he gives us substance and an extra large bag of popcorn. Not so much a concise history as a memo- ry album, this book focuses on those movies that have, directly or indirectly, hit closest to the meaning of what it means to be Jewish. The author is not an academic, a profes- sional critic or even a rabbi. His choices and opinions are arbitrary and sometimes didac- tic, but there is no denying that they are refreshingly personal. There is also no deny- ing that his book is obviously a labor of love. Rather than approach the subject in a chronological manner, Samberg hopscotches over the years, going forward and back, up and down. He takes the thematic route, Robert del Valle is a Royal Oak-based free- lance writer.
