Over 300 years, Jews have made a lasting impact on the history of Detroit.

Candlelighting
Friday, July 20, 8:47 p.m.

w

ith family roots in the city going back to the
turn of the 20th century, I grew up in north-
west Detroit, near Seven Mile and Schaefer. It
wasn't a shtetl in the sense of Hastings Street,
where my father and nine brothers and sisters,
Russian immigrants all, grew up in a devoutly
Orthodox home in the 1910s. But it did feel
Jewish. It pulsated with the sights, sounds and
scents of being a Jew in 1960s Detroit — before
the devastating '67 riots sealed the uprooting of
Detroit Jewry to Oakland County. My neighbors
ranged from observant to secular.
The neighborhood, developed after World War
II, was home to the United Hebrew Schools, the
Labor Zionist Building, Congregation Ahavas
Achim, Borenstein's Book and Music Store, kosher
butchers and a deli. Sunday mornings meant stops
at the New York Bagel Factory and, for lox and
smoked fish, the House of Foods. Congragation
Shomrey Emunah met in the area. James Vernor
School, largely Jewish, was nearby. The Jewish
Community Center was about two miles away.
What I most remember is how proud we all
were to be Jewish. Families flocked here from the
Twelfth Street, Linwood-Dexter and other mid-
town areas as the Jewish community's unyielding
northwesterly march continued.
