effort is clearly limited and it does not
portend a rise in U.S.-Israel tensions.
"This administration's policies are,
by and large, friendly to Israel," he
said. "There is a lot of unhappiness
about that in the Arabic-speaking
Mideast and among Muslims; this was
a very small step in pleasing them."

Jewish groups are choosing sides as
conservatives unveil a constitutional
amendment aimed at enshrining het-
erosexual marriage in the nation's
founding document.
The effort is being spearheaded by
the Alliance for Marriage, a group that
has successfully pushed for "defense of
marriage" acts in 34 states, which aim
at denying official recognition of
homosexual marriage.
Its 26-member board of advisers
includes Nathan Diament, director of
the Orthodox Union's Institute for
Public Affairs, Rabbi Y.A. Korff, leader
of a Chasidic group in Boston, Rabbi
Daniel Lapin of the Conservative
group Toward Tradition and Rabbi
Barry Freundel, who is Sen. Joseph
Lieberman's Washington rabbi.
It also includes Aly Abu7nakouk, exec-
utive director of the American Muslim
Council, a fact that has raised some con-
servative eyebrows. But Jewish groups
such as the Anti-Defamation League say
they do not refuse to work with the
AMC in broad domestic coalitions.
This week, the OU's Diament said
he is resigning from the Alliance board
"because of concerns that have been
raised over the positions AMC has
taken on Middle East issues, and
whether that outweighs sitting with
them on a board on a domestic issue."
Supporters say the effort to pass an
amendment on marriage just reflects long-
standing tradition in this country; critics
insist it is yet another front in the fight
against civil rights for gays and lesbians.
The Religious Action Center of
Reform Judism, the political arm of
Reform Jewry, said the proposed
amendment would "defile the
Constitution, enshrining homophobia
and intolerance in a document which
protects the rights of all Americans."
But in a statement, the OU's
Diament said the group sees the
amendment as "a reasonable and
appropriate response to recent deci-
sions by America's courts in an impor-
tant arena of social policy."
The Alliance has apparently not
yet found sponsors for the amend-
ment, and no congressional action is
scheduled.
