AMONG THE
HIGHLIGHTS for
Gary Sosnick was
the food he had in
the 1970s at the
Oakland Health
Club, or as I remember it, the
Oakland Avenue Bath House, owned
by Harry Meltzer ... "As I walked into
the health club just about dinner
time," says Gary, with much rever-
ence, "I was enveloped with the
unmistakable aroma of sauteed mush-
rooms and onions and grilling steaks.
"The plates of food were enormous
but there was always room for a bottle
of seltzer, or more ice for the scotch, or
the customary hot tea served in a water
glass instead of a cup atop a saucer.
"The one-inch-thick T-bone steak
topped out the bathhouse menu, but
at $15-per-cut, it was a little rich for
our blood. So we opted for the next-
best thing at half the price — the
grilled, one-inch-thick chopped ham-
burger steak, filled with sauteed
onions and green peppers, and covered
with sauteed mushrooms. This royal
burger also came with the famous
bathhouse salad included in the price.
At any other time, the huge bathhouse
salad would have been a sufficient
meal, but not tonight.
"The simple, but filling, meals were
notable. Grilled steaks smothered in
onions, broiled chicken, huge salads
and slabs of barbecued ribs, to name a
few. And when members of the men-
only club brought their own food, he'd
cook that too, free of charge."
THE COLORFUL AND SKILLED
restaurateurs we had back in the early
1970s, when Dennis Horwatt of PRMI
Public Relations returned to Detroit
after several years in New York City,
made for wonderful memories.
"The first three I ran into were Jim
Constand, of Jim's Garage restaurant
and Lounge across from Cobo Hall;
Joe Byers, the owner-operator of the
renown Pontchartrain Wine Cellars,
across from the Pontchartrain Hotel;
and the amazing Chuck Muer, who
had settled in as the food and beverage
operator of the Pontch. These three
were among the most charming and
gifted individuals I have ever met.
"During this time, Jim's garage was a
notorious singles hangout. From 5-
8:30 p.m. (the bar closed at 8:30)
downtown workers would flock to the
bar before the commute home. The
goings-on during this three-and-a-half
hour drink fest would shock even
