hen Dr. Arnie Gross arrived at his podiatry
office in Detroit on July 12, his appointment
book looked pretty ordinary.
But by 11:30, his waiting room was filled
with security men and a new patient he had never met,
but certainly recognized.
"An attorney for the City of Detroit who has been a
patient for years
called and said she

later, four guys in
suits walked in
wearing earphones and microphones on their lapels. They
took a quick look around and then he walked in."
While in the office, Rev. Jackson noticed artwork on the
wall with the name Jesse signed at the bottom.
The doctor explained that the work was done by his son
Jesse, 14, who at that moment was in the office with his
brother Jonathan, 19, enabling the two to meet the rev-
erend.
Dr. Gross says, "I told him, 'I have to be honest. We
didn't name him after you — but rather after Jesse, the
father of King David.'"
At that point, Dr. Gross says Rev. Jackson chuckled and
suggested a commonality between the two that went
beyond the hope of eliminating the reverend's foot pain.
"He told me he had a son Jesse at home also," Dr.
Gross says. "And he named his after King David's father,
too." ❑

"What's interesting is the effort to take something radi-
cally un Orthodox and put an Orthodox spin on it.
Everything in religious society does have a religious
spin. You might find people running on the treadmill
reading DafYomi (a page of Talmud) instead of a mag-
azine."
