shows across the country.
"I start with a sketch or idea and
then simplify or clarify that until I get
exactly what I want. I draw the sketch
on watercolor paper and build texture
in certain areas using sand, clay or
modeling paste with the acrylics.
"Next, I apply color with brush
strokes, spray and sometimes speckles,
depending on what the painting is
about.
"I try to create an animated, intense
energy field by contrasting the thick
and thin areas. My paintings, with
bold colors, are very expressionistic. I
was very influenced by the German
Expressionists, many of whom were
Jewish."
Mendelson, who had his bar mitz-
vah at a small synagogue in Detroit,
recalls painting a series on rabbis while
studying at Wayne. He met his wife,
Linda, also a watercolor artist and
teacher, while at the university, and
they have a daughter, Risa, 27, an
occupational therapist.
The Mendelsons think of their
Southfield home as a studio and a
place to showcase their work.
Although they have distinctive styles,
they both have been very active with
the Michigan Water Color Society.
"Being married to another artist has
been wonderful," Mendelson says.
"Our home is an entire artistic envi-
ronment, and we always have wonder-

ful artistic dialogues. She's my col-
league, advocate and critic, and I 'm
the same for her."
Mendelson continues to enjoy the
balance he gets through painting and
teaching others to paint.
"Being a teacher is very similar to
being an artist," he says. "I'm always
setting up new problems for students
in order for them to see new visions
and possibilities, and then I evaluate
their work and potential.
"Similarly, I set up problems and
challenges for myself and evaluate what
I've done and where I'm going."
