An eagle has landed.

Technology has helped the players
compete better, but there's one ele-
ment that will never change. "You
still gotta make it from six feet," he
says.
Born in Union City, Tenn., Fleisher
attended Miami-Dade Junior College
and drew national attention by win-
ning the U.S. Amateur in 1968; he
then won the golf gold medal at the
1969 World Maccabiah Games in
Israel. He coached the U.S.
Maccabiah golf team in 1989.
He fears for the Maccabiah team in
Israel now, he says, because of
Palestinian terrorism.

Pro Career

Fleisher joined the Professional Golf
Association tour in 1972. In his PGA
career, he played in 380 tournaments,
had 23 top-10 finishes, but won only
one event — the 1991 New England
Classic.
Growing up Jewish, Fleisher said
his grandparents never really under-
stood his choice of professions, and
his parents were a bit hesitant, too.
"You think of Jewish people as doc-
tors, lawyers, accountants or writers,"
he said. "Being a Jewish athlete is
something different."

On the PGA tour, he sometimes
teed up on restricted courses that nor-
mally didn't allow Jews to play. "And
it's still going on," he says. "It's a little
frustrating in this day and age to see
that it's still going on, but that's life
and I never hold it against someone.
"I treat people the way I want to be
treated, and I've felt that way my
whole life."
Fleisher was eyeing the $375,000
top prize in Dearborn. His wife
Wendy had caught a bug, and
remained in the hotel room until
Saturday.
His friends on the tee were saying
he needs the money, because his
daughter Jessica is engaged.
"I'm confident about my chances,"
he says. "It's a great course, the
weather is beautiful and I'm hitting
the ball well."
Fleisher will get to within two shots
of the lead on Sunday, the final day
of the tournament, but had to settle
for a fourth-place tie with Ed
Dougherty at 10-under-par 278 and
$135,000. Allen Doyle beat Doug
Tewell on the first playoff hole after a
15-under-par 273.
Those six-footers didn't fall for
Fleisher this day, but he's still way
ahead of the game.
