Tell Me Why
Hills to two Jewish friends of mine."
The conversation turned to Hitler,
and specifically his persecution of
Jews. Pickford wrote: "Unthinking
fool that I was, I tried to explain it
as a situation that the Jews had part-
ly brought on themselves. I said
something about how wealthy Jews
had bought up German properties at
bargain prices after World War I,
how I had heard that some American
Jews had formed syndicates to
exploit the depression in Germany."
While Pickford knew, she said,
"that I was describing only a very
small minority of that historic race
— a minority that one can find
among any people," apparently she
very quickly regretted her remarks.
She went home and "asked God to
forgive me and show me the right
path to help these persecuted people
... I made up my mind that I would
answer the very first appeal from the
Jewish people with my whole being."
Pickford subsequently helped raise
funds for the establishment of a
Jewish home for the aged, which
became known as the Mary Pickford
Building.
She concluded: "L know now that,
despite the ugly things that are still
happening in the world, the children
of God, those who truly love Him,
are growing closer all the time. And
whether we are Protestant, Catholic,
Mohammedan, Reformed [sic] Jew,
or Orthodox Jew, wherever the love
of God and truth is, there He is
too."
Q: Does the Tanach (Jewish Bible)
record any suicides?
A:There are four suicides in the
Tanach. The most famous is that of
the mighty Samson (Judges 16:30)
who brought down a Philistine tem-
ple and died with his victims.
Probably the most obscure is
Ahitophel, adviser to King David
who defected to the king's rebellious
son, Absalom. When Ahitophel real-
ized that the revolt was doomed, he
went home and hanged himself (II
Samuel 17:23). Saul, the first king of
Israel, upon losing the battle of
Mount Gilboa to the Philistines,
impaled himself on his sword. Saul's
armor bearer killed himself in the
same way. (I Samuel 31:4-5). Li
