Every once in awhile,
a special person touches our lives.

Irwin Alterman is
one of those people!

In April of 2001, Tom Izzo, Basketball Coach for Michigan State University, autographed one
of the Food Bank of Oakland County's t-shirts for their Annual Golf Classic held each spring.
He wrote, "Go State! Tom Izzo."

With several months to go, the food bank's Executive Director took the shirt back to the food
bank for safekeeping. One of the employees, a long time State fan -- saw the shirt and was
overwhelmed. He coveted it. That shirt sat on his desk until the morning of the golf outing
when he reluctantly added it to the other 34
spectacular gifts displayed for the Silent Auction
portion of the event.

During the auction, that man stayed in the
corner cringing at the thought that "his"
shirt would soon belong to another.

At the same time, another man hovered
near the shirt -- bidding enough money on it
that 850 men, women, and children would be
fed as a result.

And then, once the auction was over and the
cash had been donated, Irwin Alterman, in his
usual humble manner, walked over to the
employee in the corner and presented him
with "his" Tom Izzo autographed shirt.

There wasn't a dry eye around.

This is a true story, my friends. It is the actual
account of a beautiful act of love and one of the
reasons we honor Irwin today in this manner.

For all you do, for every act of kindness you show that
provides a meal for the hungriest in our community, and for the
manner in which you teach all of us to show compassion, thank
you Irwin Alterman.

You are truly loved.

P.S. Irwin, we know you are a Michigan fan, too.
