Athletes Prep
For Games

Jerusalem/17A

A

t least one g
armed guard is being
assigned to each busload of ath-
letes, and there will be more than 60 )
police officers and soldiers at the
opening ceremony on Monday, July
16, at Jerusalem's Teddy Stadium.
There is also a 24-hour hotline for
athletes to call with any problems or
questions.
"This is a group of special kids,"
said Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel
director Bob Spivak. "'The fact is, they
had a choice. In years past, it was just
about a free trip to Israel. This time
they had to decide."
Many members of the U.S. team
arrived July 8. Gathering for the intro-
ductory session July 9 at Kfar
Maccabiali in Ramat Gan, the group,
hooted and hollered its way through a
video history of the Maccabiah Games.
Created in 1932, the first Games
were held in the Ramat Gan stadium.
Over the years, the Games have fea-
tured some of the world's best Jewish
athletes, such as swimmer Mark Spitz,
baseball player Sandy Koufax and
gymnast Mitch Gaylord.
This year, one of the American
>,,vimmers is Lenny Krayzelburg, who
won two gold medals in the 2000
Sydney Olympics.
Most of the participants are not pro-
Fessional athletes. Some 75 members of
:he U.S. team are under 17 and play
)n their high school varsity teams.
While the Maccabiah isn't a proles-
donal competition, it does take time
-- and money -- to prepare for and
3articipate in the ganies.
Each player must raise $5,000 to
:over participation costs.
Its the camaraderie that brings ath-
etes back time after time, said one
vfaccabiah veteran. It's also an oppor-
unity to compete against and get to
snow other Jewish athletes from
round the world, even when they
lave to use sign language to under-
Land one another. ❑
