T
hirteen ninth-graders from the Congregation Shaarey
Zedek Religious School's Shaye Scholar program
found a way to turn a classroom exercise into an
lesson on life.
As part of the semester's curriculum on Kabbalah (Jewish
spirituality), their teacher Hadas Bernard included a section
on tikkun olam (repairing the world), and sought to take the
lesson out into the
real world.
"At the end of the
session," she says,
"we talked in detail
about what each of
us could do to make
a difference." From
a list of suggestions
she provided, the
class chose to raise
funds for a man she
had noticed selling

drugstore.
In speaking with
him, Bernard learned he was in need of funds for a surgical
procedure to reconstruct his ears and eyebrows destroyed
when he received third degree burns over 90 percent of his
body in a firebomb aLc.i.i.:,nt as a teenager.
Her class spent the evening of May 14 up to their elbows
in suds, running a car wash at the Irving and Beverly Laker
Education and Youth Complex in West Bloomfield, where
they have religious school classes. Assisted by Bernard and
Rabbi Joseph Krakoff, they were able to collect $310 to pres-
ent to the man.
"This man has a very strong spirit and although he experi-
ences pain and disfigurement, his positive outlook on life is
inspirational," Bernard says.
In a card sent to the class, the man, with one arm lost to
the fire and a disabling injury to the other expressed his
thanks. Putting their own lives into perspective, he wrote,
"As my 105th operation comes near, I will always remember
what you all did for me, which brings smiles and joy to me.
God bless you." D
