room. By the third lesson, they got there early, ready to practice. They wanted to be perfect." "They called me at home to ask me about steps," says Lynn Apel, who teaches the class with Miss Barbara. This year, the third, they had 25 dads and more than 40 daughters, ages 6-11, on stage dancing to Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild." At NIiss Barbara's new Birmingham studio, daughter-in-law Kim Fink had a similar group of dads and daughters dancing to "You Should be Dancing" by the Bee Gees. At a rehearsal in mid-May, the packed West Bloomfield studio went from pandemonium to a fully- clothed Fid/J/ontv as soon as the music began. Dads, who just moments before had been talking and jousting, quickly fell into places, dancing with gusto, if not precision. Some dads are veterans of all three years, and some are novices. "I've been dancing since I was 9," says Scott Spicuzzi of West Bloomfield, who, with 10-year-old Carla, has performed all three years. "This is lots of fun, and it's great being with the guys. It's a hoot." Laughed Franklin resident Scott Eisenberg, "I had never danced beyond a Grateful Dead concert!" But when 8-year-old Julia asked, "I had to do it. She was so excited about doing it with rue. It's great daddy-daughter time. And the amazing thing is that we all get it!" Allie Rogovein, 8, of West Bloomfield, performed for the first time with her dad, David. "I want- ed to do it because I thought it would be really fun with my dad," says Allie. "It has been weird, even though he's very good." For Rob Goodman of West Bloomfield, a three-year veteran, this year was special because he had all three daughters, Rachel, 10, Jessica, 8 and Emily, 6, dancing with him. But his wife Jodi admits, "It took a little coaxing. If I had asked, no way. It could only come from a daughter." The lights dim. The men throw on leather jackets; the girls are hot mini-motorcycle babes in patent leather biker skirts and cropped tops. The bundles of nerves and chatter of rehearsal dissolve.
