PLUMBING TIPS
BASEMENT FLOODING?
Spring rains are great for
our lawn and garden but
can also cause your base-
ment to flood. A flooded
basement can cause thou-
sands of dollars in damage
and destroy everything the
water touches. You need to
JEFFREY MOSS protect yourself. A water
powered back-up sump pump is the best
way to protect you from spring and sum-
mer rainstorms.
A Guardian water powered back-up pump
helps eliminate basement flooding without
electricity. The Guardian back-up pump is
used in emergency situations such as sump
pump failures or electrical power outages.
The Guardian pump is installed next to
your existing sump pump and will automat-
ically activate when the existing pump fails.

Likewise, office space is miniscule.
The library can house only one-third
of its collection (two-thirds must be
stored elsewhere, at some expense).
And only two bathrooms and one
water fountain are available.
Yet our cramped quarters have not
discouraged interested parties.
Every school, civic, or religious
group addressed by the Center has
made return visits. And we never turn
anyone down.
Under these circumstances, expansion
is not an option; it is a necessity. Our
main responsibility is not to the Jewish
community nor to the dedicated HMC
staff and volunteers. Rather, it is to our
visitors; some travel three or more hours
to reach the Center and depart with
greater insight and sensitivity. Surely,
most of us would prefer to remain on
the Applebaum Campus in West
Bloomfield, but since that is not feasi-
ble, we gladly support the HMC's
efforts to build elsewhere so that we can
more fully serve the public interest.

No Need To Move
Shoah Memorial
Funds used to move the Holocaust
Memorial Center to any other location
would be better utilized by investing
them in the day schools of the com-
munity ("Different Directions," June
29, page 14).
We who have volunteered at the
HMC make accommodations for the
conditions that may be less than ideal at
times during peak periods of perhaps
two to three months each year. This cer-
tainly does not justify spending donated
funds in the millions of dollars.
We, the survivors, do not need a
monument. We do need an educated
young generation. Only that will
ensure the next generation will be an
informed Jewish generation. No new
location — no building, no matter
how large or imposing — will do that.

Shoah Expansion
A Necessary Move
As a docent and the docent educator
at the Holocaust Memorial Center, I
will miss sharing the vitality of the
Jewish Community Center with our
visitors. You are correct in your com-
mentary ("What's Best For Detroit
Jewry," June 29, page 5) that the
vibrancy of our community will not
be seen on Orchard Lake Road.
However, the planned new
Holocaust Memorial Center there will
give us, besides easier access, space for
revolving exhibits, space to increase
awareness of the Jewish community
prior to the war, and space to present
more information about the righteous
and about resistance. A library where
most of the information will not be in
storage, but will be usable.
We do not teach just history to our
visitors. Our goal is to help them look
at history and look at themselves. Our
goal is that by learning the lessons of
the past, we can develop a better
future for all people. Our student visi-
tors are encouraged to return with
their parents, siblings and friends so
that the lessons of the result of hatred,
bigotry, discrimination will be learned
— and many do.
When I train a new group of
docents, I tell them that teaching these
lessons is another way of "throwing
stones in a pond." The ripples move
out and out until they enter the
streams, the lakes and the sea. Each of
us is working to create a better world
by learning the lessons of the past. .
We will teach those lessons on
Orchard Lake Road or on West Maple
Road. Our adult visitors come from all
over the world. Our students come
from all over Michigan and from
Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. There are
many people in this community who
are dedicated to helping us fulfill our
mission. Lam sure that, as the HMC
begins actively fund raising for the
new facility wherever it is, there will
be great community support.

Will Value Grow
As Space Grows?
I appreciate the editor's opinion and
the article regarding the planned move
of the Holocaust Memorial Center,
but I did not see what I perceive is a
very important ingredient in the dis-
cussion ("What's Best For Detroit
Jewry," June 29, page 5; "Different
Directions," June 29, page 14).
