presents the

2001 SENIOR CONCERT

DOWN

Concert Hall Organization) series in
2000-2001, she was booked for seven
concert halls spanning the continent.
"When I was 15, my parents and I
went to a festival run by the Jerusalem
Music Center," says Weilerstein, who
has had a bar mitzvah and still consid-
ers herself a member of her hometown
synagogue. "My brother, Joshua, who
just had his bar mitzvah, came along
with us to Israel."
The pieces Weilerstein performs
ultimately are chosen by the orcb-s-
tras. She provides a list of concertos
from her repertoire. and that gives a
base from which they can choose.
The Elgar piece she will be playing
at Meadow Brook reminds her of her
grandmother and their close relation-
ship. The cellist played a tribute to her
grandmother by performing stately
and moving excerpts from the work at
Weininger's funeral.
Weilerstein, with some 50 concert
engagements a year and on record
with the EMI Classics' "Debut" series,
tries to maintain a lifestyle to. keep her
grounded and in touch with people in
her age group.
A day prior to her Meadow Brook
concert, she will meet with the young
music students of the third annual
Summer Institute at Meadow Brook,
and give a talk on the life of a profes-
sional musician.
A history student at Columbia
University while also a music student
at the Juilliard School, she has a
boyfriend, a trombonist in
Amsterdam, and takes in the sights
wherever she travels, appreciating new
cultures and new people.
"I would never let music be all-con-
suming," says the graduate of the
Young Artist Program at the Cleveland
Institute of Music. "I take history
classes because that's something I
wanted to enrich my life, and I have a
great social life. I also like to read, take
long walks and watch old movies.
Casablanca is my favorite." 0
