Adam D. Stone of West
Bloomfield recently graduated cum
laude from Michigan State
University-Detroit College of Law.
While there, he served as editor in
chief of the Journal of Medicine
and Law as well as chair of the
Jewish Legal Society. He is the son
of Howard and Hermi Stone.
Dr. Sharon (Gordon) Ferber and
her husband Dr. Brian Ferber of
Boston recently graduated from the
University of Pennsylvania School
of Dental Medicine. Brian graduat-
ed with national board honors and
will continue his education at Tufts
University in Medford, Mass.
Sharon was the recipient of the
dean's merit scholarship for four
years and will continue her educa-
tion in the endodontics program of
Harvard University in Cambridge,
Mass. They are the children of Eric
and Sarah Gordon of West
Bloomfield and Boca Raton and
Alan and Susan Ferber of East
Brunswick, N.J.
Dr. Kenneth Chelst of Southfield
will be honored by Yeshivat Kerem
B'Yavneh at its annual dinner in
New York. Chelst will receive the
Yavneh V'Chachameha Award in
conjunction with his initiative to
launch the Ohev Shalom Rodeph
Shalom Research and Lecture
series, which will sponsor the
study of sources and texts that
investigate areas of knowledge that
may lead to peaceful solutions to
conflicts between different politi-
cal and religious factions of
Judaism.

Laura Freedman Pedrick, daughter
of Dr. Gerald and Annette
Freedman of Davisburg, Mich., was
installed as president of the congre-
gation of the Touro Synagogue in
Newport, R.I. Touro is the oldest
synagogue in the United States.
Pedrick is a graduate of the Sholem
Aleichem Institute in Detroit.
Sarah Mae Stevens of Birmingham
has accepted membership in the
National Society of Collegiate
Scholars and will
be honored during
a ceremony at
George
Washington
University in
Washington, D.C.
Stevens, a graduate
Sarah Stevens of Seaholm High
School, entered the
university as a
freshman in fall 2000, but will
have attained junior status as of
September 2001. She is a double
gold medalist from the Detroit
Skating Club and a member of
Congregation Shir Tikvah. Stevens
is the daughter of Jacquelin and
Art Stevens.

Beth A. Leeman, daughter of
Suzanne and Gary Leeman of
Farmington Hills, received a grad-
uate degree from Washington
University in St. Louis. She gradu-
ated with a doctor of medicine
degree and a master of arts in bio-
medical science from the College
of Arts and Sciences.
Nanci J. Grant was recently recog-
nized by the Women's Survival
Center of Oakland County for her
dedication to the community and
years of service as a board member.
Grant is presiding judge of general
jurisdiction for the Oakland
County Circuit Court.
Three members of the Michigan
Jewish AIDS Coalition Board of
Directors were honored at the
annual Gay and Lesbian Pride
Beth Farber of West Bloomfield,
daughter of Gene Farber, earned
a bachelor of arts degree in liber-
al arts from Sarah Lawrence
College in Bronxville, N.Y. She
concentrated in psychology-child
development.

Shelly Kitain of West Bloomfield,
senior at West Bloomfield High
School, was one of 12 winners in
the annual Kaplun Essay Contest
sponsored by the Morris J. and
Betty Kaplun Foundation and was
honored at the Lincoln Center
Synagogue in Manhattan. The essay
topic was "Why Is It Important for
Me to Maintain a Jewish Identity
in a Non-Jewish World?"
The Jewish Foundation of
Metropolitan Detroit and the
United Jewish Foundation pre-
sented the Detroit Institute of
Arts with the Bernard L. Maas
Foundation Award for achieve-
ment in Jewish culture and con-
tinuing the fine arts. The award
recognized the_DIA's commitment
to the local Jewish community,
highlighted through a 1999 exhi-
bition of illuminated manuscripts,
"Treasures of Jewish Cultural
Heritage from the Library of the
Jewish Theological Seminary."
Hadassah has been recognized by
the 2001 Association Advance
America Award honor roll of the
American Society of Association
Executives for its Check It Out
Program in the category of civic
and community volunteers activi-
ty. Hadassah and the Genzyme
Corp. have received an award in
the public education and informa-
tion category for the It's in the
Genes Program, in the category of
public education and information.
