it used to, Jacques Petit Jardin, on
Telegraph in Bingham Farms, meant
Jacques' little garden ... It was an
attractive room bent into an "E"-
shape overlooking an open court fill ,c1
with living greenery ... In any lan-
guage, even English, that's romantic
... Lighting was rosy and who doesn't
look better in rosy lights? ... The walls
overlooking the garden court were
glass and the opposite sides were mir-
rored above black brocade and beige
booths ... It was a good place to bring
your sweetie :.. Today, the former
Jacques Petit Jardin is the locale of
Morels bisto.
IT MAY HAVE BEEN plainly dec-
orated, but Dunleavy's Pub and Grub
on Grand River in Farmington v. is a
good place to grab a quick burger and
beer ... Wooden cal_ les with paper
placemats sported the pub's fare to
give the place a congenial, friendly
atmosphere ... While the menu was
very American, a wee bit of Irish was
evident in the pictures on the wall
and the Irish selections in the juke-
box.
THE SORT OF PLACE for which
that overworked adjective, "intimate,"
must have been coined, was Aliette's
Bakery on Porter in Detroit ... It sat
only 36 people, which resulted in a
race for reservations, but those who
succeeded in getting them found the
prize worth the pursuit ... The mostly
French menu varied daily, and was
written up on a chalkboard ... There
was no liquor license, so patrons may
have found their bill somewhat lower
than at other French restaurants.
IT LOOKED LIKE it might 1—we
once been a speakeasy or maybe even
a fine parlor house. and it probably
was both at one time or another dur-
Little Harry's on
ing its long career
E. Jefferson in Detroit, was a fihe
near-east side restaurant with fire-
places, a piano player, cement statues
that would grace anyone's fountain,
French paintings and crackly mirrors
... The bar was stopped with copper,
cigar store Indians lurked in corners
and cast iron stable boys reached out
to tether your horse ... The atmos-
phere may have been hokey, but there
was no nonsense about the food ... fit
to travel with the best in town.
WEARY SHOPPERS at the
Eastern Market discovered a place to
rest their shopworn bodies, relax, and
sample some fresh-from-the-market
goodies ... The Pushcart on Winder in
Detroit, had waiters and waitresses in
casual dress to help create an atmos-
phere perfect for a break in Market
Day ... Vegetables from its salad bar
