THE GALLERY RESTAURANT

"There are three large rooms in my
studio," Lentsch explains. "I paint in the
middle room and use the back room as a
storage area. In the front, I put canvases
and work that is not finished.
"I usually work on different paint-'
ings at the same time. I used to paint
at night, but since I have to get wit
into the street to get to my studio, I
usually paint in the morning [now]. I
have breakfast and go to the studio
until lunchtime.
"The rest of the day, I think about
painting, get inspired and make little
notes. I can get inspiration from very
silly things — a color on the floor or
something I read."
Lentsch, who allows her grandchil
dren to try their talents at her studio,
began painting as a child in Belgium.
If she didn't have artistic materials, she
took a stick and etched but images in
the earth surrounding her home.
Without any art school classes, she
found her own techniques and had
two exhibits by the time she was 15.
Disappointed that her mother wanted
to return to Germany, Lentsch, at 19,
decided to move to Spain with a
friend she would marry.

After hei- htisband_died 10 years later
and with a daUghier to support, Lentsch
turned: her talents to designing jewelry.
in 1973. Soon, she would resume paint- -
ing anaViist that for income. Her
friendship with an art dealer and advis
er, SebaStian Jane, deepened, and they've
been married for 10 years.
"After my work has been .dominated'
by a i-eanique or then-k,-Iry to" trtia-
something that's a challenge," says
Lentsch, who has experimented with
many variations of realistic and
abstract images. "I want ro do some-
thing I'm not used to doing."
