wore a striped shirt. And he has curly
hair like my husband (Sam) did when
he was young."
She decided to focus her second story
on street smarts, and her second on gun
safety after the massacre at Columbine
High School in Littleton, Colo. "Plus
you hear about shootings all the time in
the news; it's devastating."
Each time, she wrote one version,
then rewrote it and rewrote it again.
"It [the first book] started as a more
complicated story, but I made it shorter
so children themselves could read it. But
it's not so easy to write concisely and
succinctly. You have to choose your
words very carefully."
Bernstein also decided to add graphics
with pictures that children could color,
makinc, the books interactive.
Then she tested them out on children
at local public schools. They loved
them. And they had a few ideas. "I
asked, 'What should happen to E.
Pominonous next?' So far, they've sug-
gested water safety, fire, dealing with
strangers, medicine."
She noted how little has changed
since she was a girl.
"Fifty years ago, these were relevant
issues," she said. "Even though our soci-
ety seems so much more complex, the
stories [of E. Pominonous] are still rele-
vant — and the kids I've read them to
have found them to be, as well."

"Re'eh Veonyeynu." The Torah is read
at both morning and afternoon servic-
es. The Torah portion for both servic-
es is Exodus 32:11 14 and Exodus
34:1-10. Three persons are called up.
In the afternoon, the third person also
reads the haftara, which is Isaiah 55:6
to 56:8.
• Special significance of this fast:
The 17th of Tammuz begins the
three-week period of mourning
known in Hebrew as beyn ha-met-
zarim ("between the straits"), which
ends on Tisha b'Av. Commonly, this
period is known simply as "The
Three Weeks." During this time,
Jews do not have weddings, parties
or other celebrations; live music is
not played; haircuts are not permit-
ted (some men also do not shave);
some people also do not buy new
clothing or make improvements to
their homes.
