Manufacturer Sought
Sheyer has been awarded a patent by
the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The process has cost him about
$15,000 in patent application and
legal fees. He now would like to find a
company that could manufacture and
sell the bagbuster (which doesn't have
an official name yet) under a licensing
agreement.
"After watching what people on
peritoneal dialysis have to go through,
I want to help them in some way," he
said. "I would like to do something
good for humanity.'?
Sheyer has about a dozen medical
inventions to his credit, but none of
them has been successful. In his spare
time, he also composes music and has
entertained groups as a piano player
and singer. "I'm very lucky to have
him around as a caregiver," said Mrs.
Starr, whose brother died of kidney
disease: "Since I started dialysis, he has
helped me tremendously. His bag-
buster invention has made it easier for
me to handle the heavy bags."
Dr. John R Speck, director of the
Southeast Michigan Kidney Center in
Berkley, calls the bagbuster a "godsend
for patients who have a great deal of
difficulty emptying their bags. It's
clearly a wonderful device to assist
people on peritoneal dialysis." Dr.
Speck tested the device at the kidney
center and Sheyer gave him one of his
two prototypes. CI

LARRY ARONOFF
sister and brother in the area who can-
not devote as much time to his mother's
care as he does.
To make the bagbuster, Sheyer
bought a wire basket at a dollar store
and rigged it with a steak knife and
two coat hangers, to be hooked onto
the toilet. Mrs. Starr now simply low-
ers the bag onto the device, punctur-
ing the bag -and draining the contents.
The device then is rinsed and stored
until the next use.
