T

hrough their graphic art work, the ninth-grade
class of Yeshivat Akiva in Southfield projected
their voices, their messages, their inspirations
and their morals that they wanted everyone to

hear.
They were each given four blank linen squares, seven by
seven inches, to create a quilt to express their ideas. The
squares simply and vividly portrayed what makes these
teenagers laugh, what makes them cry and what makes
them think.
Each student selected a personal quote, song, nursery
rhyme, or message to convey his or , her outlook on life.
This was represented on one central square. Then, using
the three remaining squares, the students used a variety of
artistic forms, ranging from abstract, impressionist, three-
dimensional to photographic, to express their visions.
The thread that unites the quilt messages represents the
underlying spiritual and religious views the students
uphold. The golden Torah is not only a focal point in the
center of the quilt, but also a focal point for these students'
lives. These 19 students have made this quilt, hanging in
the main hall of their school, as a legacy for the future of
Akiva. Hopefully, their voices will always be heard.
