that already had houses on them,"
said Lauren Greenerg of
Bloomfield Hills, "and told us to.get
dirty. Some of the weeds were up to
my neck."
Help from a group from the
Jewish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit and a number
of older CARE members made it
possible to clear both of the lots and
lay fresh sod in one day.
"Neighborhood kids came over
and couldn't believe their eyes," said
Janie Shina of West Bloomfield.
"They were out of school for the
summer and looking for something
to do. Instead of praying in the
empty lots that were here before,
they helped us and had a great
time."

Wrapping Up
Friday brought the group back Lo
the original site. A 1955 newspaper
in the basement gave a look back at
both a feared Lions football team
and an area that is still a neighbor-
hood despite the deterioration it has
seen in the past 50 years.
The basement was nearly excavated
by quitting time. Where a boarded-
up home stood days ago was now a
blank canvas for the home that will
be erected in just months. Massive
piles of wood and concrete awaited
another dumpster the budget could
not yet cover.
Among the JACOB group, ethnic
differences had disappeared. These
were not Chaldeans and Jews, but
friends and teammates.
"I walked into Temple Israel on
Monday, unsure if Jews and
Chaldeans could really be compatible
in a working environment. By Friday,
it didn't even occur to me to cla3sify
anybody as one or the other," said
Jeff Zeman of Wes., Bloomfield. "Any
contrasts in religion and custom don't
begin to compare to what we share as
members of the same community."
Barbara Hechtman of West
Bloomfield, who spent the entire
week as a chaperone, observed: "The
whole idea was that if we couldn't get
30 kids together in Detroit, how
could we sit back and expect any-
thing to happen in the Middle East?"
Piled together with T-shirts, cake
and certificates for a group photo, no
one seemed to have the Middle East
in mind. But they probably wouldn't
have disagreed. ❑
